Katherine Ryan jokes on Filipino Children

Katherine Ryan

Another one bites the dust!  I guess Filipinos are really getting popular around the world to be the topic of movies, books, and now jokes.  The most recent is courtesy of Canadian comedienne Katherine Ryan who’s based in the United Kingdom.

In a segment where participants were asked to say unlikely lines from a cosmetics commercial, Ryan said: “We don’t use any of our products on animals. We use Filipino children.” A 15-second clip featuring her quip has been uploaded on YouTube last June 13. It has received 14, 000 views so far. Watch a three-minute video of the “Mock the Week” segment through this website.

According to a write-up about Mock The Week,  the show requires guests to deliver answers on unexpected subjects on the spur of the moment. Ergo, Ryan’s joke about Filipino children is an unscripted one. Read more about her in this Wikipedia profile.

Responding to a query from The Filipino Scribe, Katherine Ryan said via Twitter (@Kathbum):  ”If you’d watched the whole show instead of reacting to a still shot out of context, you might feel that I was criticizing the EXPLOITATION of children. The joke is never, ever ON children. Watch the show.”

The one thing I like about reality talent search is that it gives us all a chance to witness real talent.  I’ll be honest… I don’t really get to watch alot of TV shows lately but when I saw this last night my eyes was really glued!  Where in the world was this girl hiding and why haven’t she gotten a break yet?

KZ Tandingan, 20, from Davao del Sur wowed the crowd and the celebrity judges with her unique rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The crowd went wild with her first performance and they asked for more (even the judges did!). The young auditionee wowed the audience and to my surprise started rapping in the middle of her second song Ready or Not.

When asked why she joined X Factor she said she wanted to prove to everyone that the Philippine music industry is not only for those who are “maganda, makinis ang balat, matangkad at biritero’t biritera. (beautiful, with smooth / clear skin, tall, and belters) ”   She revealed that she had a problem with her voice that made her change her style. Looks like it help her re-discover herself and find a genre of her own.  The four star-judges even volunteered to take the backseat in KZ’s future concert proving that the girl is incredibly talented.

Social Media Day 2012

Social Media Day 2012

Asia dominates the world’s biggest social networking markets according to research from blog 24/7 Wall Street who compiled a list of countries where Facebook penetration (usage per population) is highest.  The Philippines topped the list with  Facebook at 93.9%, Twitter at 16.1%, LinkedIn at 1.9%, and Internet Use at 29.7%.

Social network penetration is incredibly high in the Philippines, reaching 95%.  Facebook is the country’s most popular website, more so than Google, and has a penetration rate of 93.9%.  The Philippines is also the eighth most popular country for Twitter use on a global scale, with a penetration rate of 16.1%.  The popularity of photo sharing has increased by 46% in the country in one year, largely due to Facebook.  Social networking is so popular among Filipinos, the country has been nicknamed “The Social Networking Capital of the World.”

This year definitely is an exciting year for the Philippines in terms of Social Media in general.  Lately, I’ve been very busy attending industry events representing my company (Visual Ally) and every event is a blast.  Meeting new people and networking with possible partners and clients is something I really enjoy doing.  I’m excited for tomorrow’s event and hope to meet the people I interact with on a regular basis online but this time in the flesh.

So if you’re curios like me… join me!
